The Oakland Athletics squeaked to victory over the Boston Red Sox yesterday at Fenway Park with the Athletics triumphant 9 to 8. You don’t often see such high scoring games, and anyone with Red Sox tickets sure got their money’s worth. This high-scoring game saw the teams combine for a whopping 17 runs! Talk about excitement! Athletics pitcher Vin Mazzaro (6.08 ERA) got the win, while Tim Wakefield (6.02 ERA) took the loss for the Red Sox. Brett Anderson went 2 innings for the Athletics, allowed 5 hits, no home runs and 2 earned runs with no walks and one strikeout. Also pitching for the Athletics was Brad Ziegler (2.70), and Jerry Blevins (5.30). The Red Sox’s starter Tim Wakefield went 6 innings, allowed 8 hits, 2 home runs and 6 earned runs with no walks and 4 strikeouts. Ramon Ramirez (6.20), Hideki Okajima (5.19), Manny Delcarmen (2.36), and Scott Atchison (4.50) also pitched for the Red Sox. With the win, Mazzaro’s record goes to 1-0, while Wakefield falls to 1-4. Andrew Bailey earned the save for the Athletics, bringing his saves up to 12.
