Rays fall to Red Sox 6-3

The Boston Red Sox did battle with the the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday at Tropicana Field with the Red Sox picking up the W 6 to 3. Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz (4.40 ERA) got the win, while David Price (4.75 ERA) took the loss for the Rays. Clay Buchholz went 6 innings for the Red Sox, allowed 6 hits, no home runs and 3 earned runs with one walk and 3 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Red Sox was Billy Wagner (0.00), and Daniel Bard (3.40). The Rays’s starter David Price went 5.1 innings, allowed 6 hits, one home run and 4 earned runs with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Russ Springer (3.59), Brian Shouse (5.48), Chad Bradford (3.38), and Lance Cormier (2.91) also pitched for the Rays. With the win, Buchholz’s record goes to 4-3, while Price is at 7-7. Jonathan Papelbon earned the save for the Red Sox, bringing his saves up to 34.

In addition to the 6 runs, the Red Sox scored 12 hits and committed no errors. Kevin Youkilis led the Red Sox in hitting with 3 hits, followed by Jason Bay’s 2 hits, and Victor Martinez with 2. The Rays didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. The Rays managed 3 runs, 6 hits and no errors.

Umpiring duties were performed by Ed Rapuano, Paul Schrieber, Paul Nauert and Joe West. There were 20,823 Rays ticket holders in attendance at Tropicana Field.

The win puts the Red Sox at a record of 78-55, (7.5 games behind first place in the division), while the loss brings the Rays to 72-61, (13.5 games behind the division leader).
