The Tampa Bay Rays barely got a “W” over the Boston Red Sox yesterday at Tropicana Field with the Rays winning 6 to 4. It was quite a game that followers with Rays tickets will be talking about for days.
Rays pitcher David Price (2.42 ERA) got the win, while Tim Wakefield (5.22 ERA) took the loss for the Red Sox. David Price went 7.2 solid innings for the Rays, allowed 8 hits, one home run and 2 earned runs with one walk and 10 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Rays was Grant Balfour (2.27), and Randy Choate (5.91). The Red Sox’s starter Tim Wakefield went 5.2 innings, allowed 4 hits, one home run and 6 earned runs with 6 walks and 3 strikeouts. Dustin Richardson (2.45), Ramon Ramirez (4.76), Jonathan Papelbon (3.60), and Robert Manuel (7.71) also pitched for the Red Sox. With the win, Price’s record goes to 12-4, while Wakefield falls to 3-7. Matt Garza earned the save for the Rays, bringing his saves up to 1.
In addition to the 6 runs, the Rays managed 5 hits and committed no errors. It wasn’t a huge day for anyone at the plate for the Rays, as nobody managed more than 2 hits. Mike Cameron and Darnell McDonald tied for most hits for the Red Sox with 3, followed by J.D. Drew with one hit. Marco Scutaro could not get much going at the plate as he left 5 runners on base. The Red Sox managed 4 runs, 11 hits and 2 errors.
Umpiring duties were performed by Todd Tichenor, John Hirschbeck, Laz Diaz and James Hoye. There were 24,356 Rays ticket holders in attendance at Tropicana Field.
